In 2024, we expanded on our Co-Design Toolkit and created the Retrofit Co-Design Toolkit, to address one of the most pressing challenges facing the built environment: the sustainable retrofit of existing homes.
Our Retrofit Co-Design Toolkit provides a short guide for engaging residents meaningfully in the retrofit process, recognising that successful environmental upgrades depend as much on resident buy-in as technical solutions.
Building on our experience in community-led design, this practical resource helps housing providers, local authorities, design teams and residents work together effectively throughout the retrofit journey - from initial engagement through to post-completion evaluation. The toolkit combines our expertise in both sustainable design and community engagement, offering tried-and-tested methods for bringing technical knowledge and lived experience together.
Key features include:
- Practical tools for meaningful resident engagement
- Step-by-step guidance through the retrofit process from a resident’s perspective
- Real-world case studies and client testimonials
- Strategies for building trust and maintaining momentum
As our client for the Becontree Retrofit project Amandeep Singh Kalra notes: "Co-designing with residents to design solutions tailored to their homes not only fosters trust but also provides us with a deeper understanding of the challenges residents encounter in their homes. This approach is a must for any retrofit program."
This resource represents our commitment to sharing knowledge and promoting best practice in sustainable, community-led design. We believe that successful retrofit programmes must combine technical excellence with genuine community engagement - creating solutions that work for residents while meeting our collective environmental responsibilities.
